About the school
Kent College Pembury is an independent day and boarding school for girls between the ages of three
and eighteen. lt was founded in 1886 in Folkestone, by the Wesleyan Methodist Schools' Association, and moved to its current rural location in Pembury, near Tunbridge Wells, in 1939.
The school is divided into two sections: the prep school, including the Early Years Foundation Stage
(EYFS), and the senior school. Accommodation, including two residential boarding houses, which are organised to meet the needs of different age groups, is arranged around a Victorian manor house, which is set in a 75-acre parkland site.
The school is part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, which acts as its proprietor, with
governance delegated to the school's local governing body. Since the previous inspection, a new headmistress and chair of governors have been appointed, and the EYFS outdoor educational area has been enhanced.
What the school seeks to do
The school aims to provide all pupils with an education that maximises academic aspirations, and
equips them to make a purposeful contribution as global citizens, whilst placing physical, spiritual and mental well-being at the heart of school life.
About the pupils
Pupils come from a range of business and professional backgrounds and most are from the
surrounding counties. Just over a third of boarders are from the UK with the remainder coming from overseas. A small number of boarders have parents in the armed forces. Nationally standardised test data indicate that the ability of the pupils in the prep school and in the senior school is above average. ln the sixth form, the ability is broadly average. The school has identified 89 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities, which include specific learning difficulties, 63 of whom receive specialist support. One pupil has an education, health and care (EHC) plan. English is an additional language (EAL) for 48 pupils, 27 of whom receive additional support. Data used by the school have identified 74 pupils as being the most able in its population, and the curriculum is modified for them, as well as for 68 other pupils because of their talents in sport, art, music or drama.
