About the school
Charterhouse is an independent co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged between 13 and 18 years. At present, female pupils are only admitted into the sixth-form. It was founded near Smithfield in London in 1611, and moved to its current site near Guildford in 1872. The school is a charitable company limited by guarantee, of which the governing body are the trustees. The current headmaster took up his post in January 2018.

Since the previous inspection, boarding accommodation has been reorganised to create three sixth form girls' houses to replace the previous arrangement of mixed houses with separate sleeping accommodation. The school has opened a central dining hall and completed a new science and mathematics building. The senior leadership team has expanded to include the appointment of a senior housemistress.

What the school seeks to do
Charterhouse aims to be an academically-focused, all-round school. It seeks to stimulate independent enquiry and intellectual curiosity, to enrich spiritual awareness, to match physical fitness with a love of the arts, and to promote individuality, together with a sense of duty and commitment to friends and society.

About the pupils
Pupils come from a range of professional backgrounds, mostly from British families. Boarders come mainly from the south east of England and from 46 countries overseas. Nationally standardised test data provided by the school indicates that the ability range of pupils in the school is above average.

The school has identified 185 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), 40 of whom receive additional support. No pupil in the school has an education health and care (EHC) plan. There are 50 pupils who have English as an additional language (EAL), of whom 25 receive additional specialist help with English. The most able pupils' needs are met within lessons and through academic extension programmes.

Whether you join us aged 13 or 16, you will be developing throughout your time at Charterhouse. Some changes will be subtle – little things like having more confidence to make new friends or take on a responsibility. Others will be more striking: leaving the School with the proven ability to think in different ways and to study independently. You’ll also develop awareness of our set of core values – responsibility, open-mindedness, perseverance, moral courage and kindness. We believe these are key to being successful at this fantastic school and will be crucial for success in adult life, alongside all the skills and qualifications you will gain during your time with us.

Life at Charterhouse is always a partnership between the School and you, individually. We will make sure you are supported at every turn and that you feel comfortable, respected, safe and secure in your environment. In return we want you to take an active role in your own education, and take responsibility for it, not simply allowing others to educate you. From challenge and inspiration in the classroom to a vast range of different co-curricular activities, many of which are pupil-led, there is a huge breadth of opportunity available to you here. Our role is to help you to navigate these options, to make the most of every day, and to have a lot of fun along the way.
