About the school
Exeter School is an independent day school for boys and girls aged between 7 and 18 years. It is a
charitable trust overseen by a board of governors. Situated in 25 acres of land, the school was founded
in 1633 and has occupied its present site since 1880. A preparatory school has been on-site since the
early 1900s and in 2000 became Exeter Junior School. The school celebrates 20 years of full Co-
education this year.
Since the previous inspection the school has a new science, design and technology suite, two new
classrooms in the senior school, a careers hub in the senior school library and has renovated the drama
studio. It has new changing facilities for boys and girls in junior and senior schools, a field sports arena
and indoor shooting range, new fitness suite, weights room and studio area and a four-lane, 25 metre
indoor swimming pool.
What the school seeks to do
Exeter School seeks to develop the academic, personal and physical potential of each pupil and to
uphold the highest standards of academic teaching and pastoral care. It aims to sustain the richness
and variety of its extra-curricular provision, to promote high expectations of pupil conduct within a
friendly, tolerant and safe environment and encourage pupils to contribute to the wider community.
About the pupils
Pupils come predominantly from a range of professional families and live within a 20-mile radius of
the school. The school's own assessment indicates that the ability of pupils is above average. The
school has identified 87 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities, which include
dyslexia and dyspraxia, all of whom receive additional specialist help. No pupil in the school has an
education, health and care (EHC) plan or a statement of special educational needs. English is an
additional language (EAL) for nine pupils, whose needs are supported by their classroom teachers and
learning supportstaff. The most able receive specialist support from their teachers and the curriculum
is modified for a small number of pupils to support their special talents in sport.
