院校概述

Immanuel College is a co-educational day school for pupils aged between 4 and 19 years and situated in Bushey, north west of London, in the 11-acre grounds of Caldecote Towers. A board of governors are trustees and directors of the school's charitable company and undertake the proprietorial responsi bilities.

Since the previous inspection, a new headmaster has been appointed. A larger dining room has been built and the school library relocated and refurbished.

The school was founded in 1990 by the late Chief Rabbi Lord Immanuel Jakobovits to fulfil his vision of an educational establishment that affirms orthodox Jewish values and practice in the context of rigorous secular studies. The school is divided into three sections: the preparatory school, for pupils aged 4 to 11; the senior school, for pupils to the age of 16; and sixth form.

The school aims for the highest standards of academic excellence in both Jewish and secular studies. It further aims to produce students who are thoroughly at home in both contemporary society and the full range of their Jewish heritage and are potential leaders in all spheres of contemporary life.

About the pupils
Pupils come from a range of backgrounds, mostly from British families living within a five-mile radius of the school. Data provided by the school indicate that the ability of the pupils in the senior school is above average and in the sixth form below average compared with pupils taking the same tests nationally. The school has identified 272 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), which includes dyslexia and dyspraxia. Two pupils have an educational health and care (EHC) plan. English is an additional language (EAL) for three pupils, who receive one-to-one support. The curriculum is modified for pupils identified as being the most able or talented in particular areas.

Immanuel is a highly successful, modern orthodox, co-educational, independent Jewish day school, located in south-west Hertfordshire in an area which can genuinely be described as a leafy suburb, but within easy reach of north London. It currently has 700 pupils, including approximately 120 in the Preparatory School (which opened in 2011) and it has a thriving and growing Sixth Form. It is characterised by exceptional academic standards, outstanding pastoral care and a renowned programme of Jewish study which complements the demanding academic curriculum and the wide range of extra-curricular activities.

The atmosphere at the College is one of happy, fulfilled young people, fully engaged in the life of the school community, aspirational and committed to their studies. We aim to help our students learn to succeed and find happiness far into the future, and to achieve this we have a skilled and caring staff who help individuals to be the best they can be. Relations between the pupils and the staff are open, warm and mutually supportive, characteristics which are also found in the wider Immanuel community of parents and alumni.

We believe that our students should cultivate their individuality in the context of a strong team and community spirit and should be taught both leadership skills and how to join others to build successful enterprises. We work to ensure that young people in our care learn to inhabit and relish their Jewish identity as a familiar part of their everyday working, sporting and social selves, not as an after-thought separated from academic study or progress in the wider world. Moreover, we are providing an environment which contributes to Menschlichkeit, a moral maturity and Jewish righteousness where Immanuel students graduate from the College with a sense of justice, fairness, honesty and a considerate attitude to others as well as an understanding of their place in a multi-cultural and pluralistic society.

We are proud of our academic results, our provision of art, music, drama and sport as well as our unforgettable school trips and visits. The College facilities are being developed and extended each year. Recent changes include: a newly refurbished library, a new computer suite, a Sixth Form Art Studio, a larger and modernised Dining Room and a new playground for the Prep School.

Immanuel stands uniquely at the intersection of the collegiate worlds of the elite HMC organisation and Jewish education. We have been frequently ranked in the top 60 independent schools in the country and we are famous for our students securing entry to the best courses at the best universities. We are entering a new and exciting phase of our development – the College only opened in 1990 – and we will continue to strive for the highest academic standards while maintaining our warm and caring community for which Immanuel is rightly renowned.
