About the school
Woodhouse Grove School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged between 2 and 18 years. It is owned and administered by the Methodist Independent Schools Trust (MIST), who are supported by a local advisory board of governors. The school was founded in 1812, originally for the sons of Methodist ministers, and has been fully co-educational since 1985.
The school comprises a junior school, for pupils aged 2 to 11 years, incorporating an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), for children aged from 2 to 5 years, and a senior school on a site close by. Boarders are accommodated in two houses, one for male pupils and one for female pupils, on the senior school site.
What the school seeks to do
The school aims to promote academic excellence, to realise the full potential of every individual to be the best that he or she can be, and to prepare pupils for the world beyond school. It seeks to foster mature, caring behaviour, to promote high standards of social responsibility and to encourage leadership, adventure and self-discovery.
About the pupils
Data provided by the school indicates that the ability of the junior school pupils is broadly average, and that the ability of pupils in the senior school and those in the sixth form above average, compared to those taking the same tests nationally. The number of pupils identified by the school as requiring support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is 177, with 112 pupils receiving additional support. Seven pupils have an education, health and care (EHC) plan. English is an additional language for 65 pupils, 38 of whom receive additional support for their English. Pupils identified as being the most able in the school population are provided with a range of appropriate opportunities to be stretched and challenged.
