About the school
Taunton School was founded in 1847 for boarders and day boys belonging to non-conformist families.

It moved to its present site in 1870. It became fully co-educational in 1973 and now educates both boarders and day pupils aged between 13 and 19. Taunton School International (TSI) occupies an
adjacent site and provides one- and two-year intensive GCSE courses for international and British pupils. The school is a registered charity with 15 governors, many of whom have prior links with
Taunton School. Since the previous inspection, there has been additional investment in boarding facilities and refurbishment.

What the school seeks to do
The aim of the school is to nurture, challenge and inspire young people to succeed in a global community. The focus is on ensur ing that pupils are prepared for their lives beyond school and in a
world that changes rapidly. As an IB World School, the school seeks to be innovative, forward thinking, global in outlook and down to earth in appr oach.

About the pupils
The day pupils largely come from professional British families from a wide area. Boarding pupils come from 38 different countries, including pupils from military families. Data provided by the school
indicate that the ability of pupils in the senior section up to Year 11 is average compared to those taking the same tests nationally, and in Years 12 and 13 the ability of the pupils is above average
compared to those taking the same tests nationally, with a fairly wide range of abilities represented. The school has identified 142 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)
which include dyslexia and dyspraxia, of whom 67 receive additional support. There are no pupils currently with an education, health and care (EHC) plan. English is an additional language (EAL) for 230
pupils, of whom 97 receive additional support.
