About the school
Ratcliffe College is a co-educational Catholic independent day and boarding school in rural Leicestershire, founded in 1847 by the Institute of Charity, the Rosminian Order, which administers the
school as proprietor through the board of trustees. There is a governing body which oversees all sections of the school.
The school has an Early Years Foundation Stage setting for 3-5 year olds. Since the previous inspection a new preparatory school building has been opened for 5-11 year olds. The school provides boarding for 11-18 year olds.
What the school seeks to do
The school aims to educate young people in the spirit of the gospel and the traditions of the Catholic Church, seeking to nurture the God-given talents and potential of each individual so that each one may become a confident, responsible and useful member of society. Whilst the school operates as a Catholic school, it welcomes children of other denominations and faiths whose parents feel they can share in, and benefit from, the ethos and environment of the school.
About the pupils
The majority of pupils come from families living in the local community. The boarding community has a strong international composition. Most pupils come from business or professional families. Nationally standardised tests indicate the ability profile of pupils in both the preparatory and the senior school is above average. There are 91 pupils identified as requiring support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
These pupils require support with a range of disabilities such as dyslexia and of these, 63 attend learning
support groups or receive specialist tuition or both. No pupil has a statement of special educational needs or an education, health and care (EHC) plan. Sixty-three pupils have English as an aditional language (EAL) of whom 56 receive specialist language support. The school has strategies for supporting its more able pupils.
