Our schools
Bedales comprises three co-educational boarding and day schools located in 120 acres of South Downs National Park in Petersfield, Hampshire:
* Bedales Nursery & Pre-prep, Dunannie (2 years 9 months – 8 years)
* Bedales Prep, Dunhurst (8-13 years)
* Bedales Senior School (13-18 years)

Our ethos
The vision of Bedales founder John Badley was to create a school which would be profoundly different from the public schools of his day. From 1893, when Bedales began, there was a determination to shape the school around what was considered best for the individual child’s educational welfare and happiness.
Two strands predominated: breadth (“head, hand and heart”) and the cultivation of the individual’s intellectual and personal qualities (“intelligence, initiative and individuality”).

Many of Badley’s early innovations are now mainstream: co-educational boarding (at Bedales since 1898); the emphasis put on the arts, sciences and voluntary service; the importance of pastoral care; and listening to students’ views (the Bedales School Council, established in 1916, was one of the first school councils).

Even so, the contrast between Bedales and other schools remains strong. We believe that our informality engenders a genuine sense of partnership between teacher and student – a shared excitement about ideas and educational discovery. Educational innovation continues today, with our Bedales Assessed Courses, project-based learning and the later start to the school day.

Our aims
The five aims of Bedales Schools are:
* To develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning who cherish independent thought.
* To enable students' talents to develop through doing and making.
* To foster individuality and encourage initiative, creativity and the appreciation of the beautiful.
* To enable students, former students, parents and staff to take pride in the community’s distinctiveness and to feel valued and nourished by the community.
* To foster interest beyond the school: engaging with the local community and developing a national and international awareness.

校长理念

Bedales was founded as an alternative to the mainstream 19th century British ‘Public School’ and, while much has changed since 1893, we still strive to educate the young people in our care with the same questioning approach to learning and living. The school’s motto – work of each for weal of all – emphasises both our attention to nurturing the individual as well as coming together in a collective endeavour. 

Today, our approach draws on our innovative traditions with Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs) taught alongside five core GCSEs, project-based learning as a key part of our Block 3 (year 9) curriculum and approaches to boarding, pastoral care and interpersonal relationships that break down unnecessary barriers between the generations, the sexes and the wider community. 

Our students finish their journey with us to go on to a wide range of some of the most prestigious academic and artistic institutions in the UK and internationally, joining a host of alumni who are distinctively Bedalian for life. While we take a kinder, more ‘child-centered’ approach, our students are ambitious and you will find they go on to contribute to society in remarkable ways. 
The best way of understanding what we have to offer at all three of our schools is to pay us a visit. We are proud of our community and genuinely enjoy welcoming visitors who come and see us in our campus, nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park.
