About the school
Royal Russell School is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls between the ages
of 3 and 19. lt was founded in 1853 and moved to its current parkland site in Croydon in 1924. The school is a charity whose patron is Her Majesty the Queen. lt is overseen and governed by the Russell School Trust. A new chairman and school president have been appointed since the previous inspection.

The school has three sections, the Early Years Foundation Stage, the junior school and the senior school. They are located in distinct buildings and share some facilities.

There are 3 boarding houses; 2 for boys, and 1 for girls. Pupils board from the age of 11. Since the previous inspection the school has opened a new boy's boarding house and a residential wing for sixth form girls.

What the school seeks to do
The school aims to provide an outstanding academic education and to nurture pupils' intellectual and
personal development. lt seeks to be the family school of choice, one which embraces and supports the community and appreciates its diversity, inclusivity and international connections.

About the pupils
Boarders come from a wide range of countries and day pupils are drawn largely from local professional
and business families and reflect the social and cultural mix of the surrounding area. Nationally standardised test data provided by the school indicate the ability profile of the senior school is above average and, of the sixth form, is broadly average. The school has identified 225 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities such as dyslexia and other learning, emotional and physical disabilities, 46 of whom receive additional specialist help. Also, 4 pupils have an education, health and care plan or a statement of special educational needs. English is an additional language for 95 pupils, whose needs are met by specialist teaching. Data used by the school have identified 205pupils as being the most able in the school's population, and 228 who have special talents in sport andcreative and performing arts; their needs are met through the curriculum, an enrichment programme, and a scholarship programme.
